Illinois Quick Hits: $20M+ announced for manufacturing academies
(The Center Square) – Illinois officials have announced more than $20 million in capital grants to establish manufacturing training academies at five community colleges.
According to a news release from Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office, the grants include $6 million awards to Kaskaskia College in Centralia and Parkland College in Champaign, $3 million each for Illinois Central College in East Peoria and Lake Land College in Mattoon, and $2,369,150 for Lewis & Clark College in Godfrey.
CHICAGO JOINS LAWSUIT AGAINST PUBLIC CHARGE RULE
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a coalition of cities and counties in a lawsuit challenging the federal government’s new public charge rule.
The suit filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York argued that the rule unlawfully expands the government’s authority to consider an immigrant’s use of public benefits.
The coalition includes the city of Chicago, the city and county of San Francisco, the county of Santa Clara, the city of Seattle, King County, Washington, and the Public Rights Project.
METROPOLITAN MAYOR CAUCUS VISITS CHICAGO
Members of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Executive Board visited Chicago on Monday.
According to a statement from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office, members discussed pushing to restore Local Government Distributive Fund revenues.
The group said municipalities statewide have lost nearly $13.9 billion in revenue since the state reduced the LGDF from 10% in 2010 to 6.47% today.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES HOLD VOTER REGISTRATION EVENTS
Three Illinois community colleges are among 15 across the country that are holding National Voter Registration Day events on Tuesday.
Elgin Community College in Elgin, Kaskaskia College in Centralia and Malcolm X College in Chicago are participating in Project Hope’s public art project and registration drive.
