Illinois Quick Hits: Elections board tells DOJ it’s following the law
(The Center Square) – In a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, the Illinois State Board of Elections said it is complying with all federal laws, and pushed back against claims of potential voter fraud.
The letter is a response to a previous DOJ letter to the board, which threatened to sue elections officials in the state for knowingly keeping ineligible names on the voter rolls, such as noncitizens.
The DOJ also sued the board in an attempt to access the complete voter registration records of the state in an attempt to audit the validity of voter registration in the state.
AUDIT: CHICAGO LOSING ‘RAT WAR’ WITH ANNUAL $12.5M COST
An audit conducted by Chicago’s Office of the Inspector General has revealed that the Sanitation and Streets Department’s Rat Abatement Program hasn’t been effective in tamping down the city’s rodent population.
Released Tuesday, the Inspector General reviewed the department’s roughly $12.5 million rodent-control program for 12 months, beginning in July 2023. The audit details the program has not effectively addressed root causes of rat infestations or made preventative efforts, instead only operating by responding to complaints from residents.
The city placed second when ranked nationally by rat population, just behind Los Angeles, by Orkin Pest Control in 2025. The city held the number one spot for the preceding decade.
U.S. REP. DELIA RAMIREZ TO TAKE MEDICAL LEAVE IN AUGUST
U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., announced Wednesday she’d be taking a medical leave of absence for several weeks for a “medically required surgical procedure,” noting she wanted to be transparent.
The announcement comes as U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has been absent from capitol hill after he suffered a cardiac arrest, sparking speculation and questions about his ability to remain in office.
The congresswoman also said that her staff will remain working and constituent services available during her absence, which aligns with Congress’ August recess.
