Brokemeier’s Four Touchdown Catches, Watson’s Three Scores Carry Metro-East Lutheran Past Martinsville 78-36
MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Metro-East Lutheran turned a pair of big-play weapons loose on the road Saturday, riding Isaak Brokemeier’s four touchdown receptions and Lee Watson’s three rushing scores to a 78-36 conference win over Martinsville on Aug. 29.
The Knights piled up 506 yards of total offense and scored in bunches throughout the afternoon, with quarterback Ben Schilbe accounting for five touchdown passes and the ground game adding 273 yards on just 21 carries — a 13.0-yard average that kept Martinsville’s defense chasing from the opening series.
Brokemeier was the headliner. The senior caught just five passes but turned them into 215 yards, an average of 43.0 yards per reception, and found the end zone four times. Schilbe, a senior, finished 7-of-14 for 233 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions, posting a 135.4 passer rating. Nearly every completion mattered: of his seven, five went for scores.
Watson supplied the complementary punch. The senior back carried 14 times for 161 yards, averaging 11.5 per attempt, and reached the end zone three times. Freshman Logan Adolph needed only one touch to make his mark, breaking a 72-yard touchdown run on his lone carry. Senior Tyler Calvert added a 13-yard touchdown catch, and freshman Marty Ballantyne chipped in 17 yards on two carries.
The Knights’ defense did its share of the damage as well, intercepting Martinsville senior quarterback Jaxson Miller three times. Brokemeier picked off two passes to go with his four receiving scores, and senior Camren Smith grabbed the third. Freshman Collin Pryor was credited with an assisted tackle.
Martinsville did not go quietly. Miller threw for 228 yards on 11-of-24 passing with three touchdowns, all of them to sophomore Kayden Jenkins, who hauled in five catches for 148 yards and a 29.6-yard average. Senior Seth Svika was the Bluestreaks’ most complete offensive presence, rushing seven times for 79 yards and a touchdown while adding five receptions for 57 yards. Freshman Mica Fletcher ran three times for 29 yards and a score, and junior Lucas Mccandless added a 23-yard reception.
But the Bluestreaks managed only 142 rushing yards and 370 total, and the three turnovers proved too much to overcome against an opponent averaging better than a first down per snap.
Metro-East Lutheran improves to 4-2 overall. Martinsville falls to 3-3.
