Oblong Mounts Six-Run Sixth Inning to Stun Martinsville, 13-12
In a wild, back-and-forth offensive shootout, the Oblong varsity softball team erased a late deficit with a massive six-run sixth inning to capture a thrilling 13-12 road victory over Martinsville on Monday afternoon.
Trailing 10-7 entering the sixth frame, the Oblong bats erupted. Capitalizing on timely hitting and tremendous plate discipline, the visitors sent runner after runner across the plate to completely flip the script and seize a 13-10 advantage. Though Martinsville battled back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to a single run, Oblong senior reliever Zya Bricker slammed the door shut with a scoreless seventh inning to secure the dramatic conference win.
Sophomore standout Brooke Kintner was the primary offensive catalyst for Oblong, delivering a 2-for-4 performance that included a pair of triples, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Junior Norah Hoke was a constant presence on the basepaths, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk. Freshman Gracie Russell also came through in crucial situations, driving in two runs and crossing the plate three times, while Bricker helped her own cause at the dish with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Martinsville struck hard early in the contest, chasing Oblong junior starter Sam Meese in the second inning after plating five runs to take a 6-4 lead. The home team continually answered Oblong’s attempts to close the gap, extending their lead to 8-5 after the fourth and 10-7 after the fifth.
Following the early exit by Meese, Bricker took over in the circle and delivered a vital, stabilizing performance for the visitors. The senior threw six full innings of relief, striking out five and scattering 10 hits while allowing five earned runs. Working her way out of multiple jams, Bricker gave her offense the time it needed to mount the late-game surge. Martinsville’s offense was productive from start to finish—tallying 12 runs on 12 hits and drawing six walks—but ultimately couldn’t withstand Oblong’s relentless sixth-inning rally.
