Dieterich Capitalizes on Free Passes and Errors to Overwhelm Martinsville in 19-1 Rout
The Dieterich varsity softball team used a staggering 12-run third inning to erase an early deficit and cruise to a commanding 19-1 non-conference victory over Martinsville on Thursday afternoon.
Despite recording only six hits in the five-inning contest, the visiting offense was remarkably efficient. Dieterich took full advantage of tremendous plate discipline and defensive miscues, capitalizing on 16 walks, three hit batsmen, and nine Martinsville fielding errors to generate their massive run total.
Freshman A. Boerngen was the standout performer for Dieterich, doing heavy lifting both in the circle and at the plate. Boerngen pitched a complete-game gem, allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out five and issuing zero walks over her five innings of work. Offensively, she drove in a team-high four runs, drew two walks, and laced a double.
Martinsville actually struck first in the contest, pushing a run across in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. However, the game completely unraveled for the hosts in the top of the third. Dieterich’s patient approach at the dish sparked a relentless rally, sending wave after wave of batters to the plate to turn a narrow deficit into an insurmountable 12-1 advantage. The visitors kept their foot on the gas, tacking on three more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to ultimately enforce the run rule.
Junior Callie Faller was perfectly productive at the plate for Dieterich, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, three runs scored, and a pair of walks. Freshman Lydia Wohltman reached base four times, recording a hit, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two runs scored while also stealing a base. Freshman Kensi Stortzum demonstrated exceptional plate discipline, drawing four walks and scoring twice.
While Martinsville struggled defensively, Dieterich played a flawless game in the field. The defense committed zero errors behind Boerngen, providing a clean and clinical performance to seal the dominant road victory.
