Martinsville Capitalizes on Arcola Errors to Secure 10-6 Home Victory
The Martinsville varsity softball team utilized timely offense and capitalized heavily on defensive miscues to defeat visiting Arcola 10-6 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon. Despite being outhit 9-5 by the visitors, Martinsville scored eight unearned runs as Arcola committed eight costly fielding errors.
Arcola fell behind 1-0 after the first inning but responded with a four-run surge in the top of the second to take early control of the game. However, the momentum shifted permanently in the middle frames. Martinsville erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third inning to regain the lead, then effectively put the game out of reach with another four-run outburst in the fourth, making it 9-5.
Arcola’s pitching staff suffered from the defensive collapse behind them. Senior Anahi Cooper started in the circle and threw three innings, allowing five runs on just two hits, though zero runs were earned. Senior M. Pilkington pitched three innings of relief, surrendering five runs—only two of which were earned—while striking out four and giving up three hits.
Offensively, Arcola produced several standout performances despite the loss. Anahi Cooper paced the lineup, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Pilkington reached base in four of her five plate appearances, lacing a double and drawing three walks. Freshman Averi Kutz was a spark plug near the top of the order, reaching base three times with a hit and two walks while scoring twice, and sophomore Kayla Lyons added a pair of RBIs.
Martinsville tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning to cap the scoring. Their pitching staff managed to navigate around nine Arcola hits and nine walks to strand 14 opposing baserunners, ultimately securing the 10-6 victory.
