Charity Hammond’s .667 Night Carries Martinsville Past Oblong in Three-Set Conference Win

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Sophomore Charity Hammond put down eight kills without an attack error, and Martinsville took care of the ball just enough at the net to turn back Oblong 2-1 in conference play on Sept. 19.

The Bluestreaks swung at a .160 clip as a team and out-killed the Panthers 31-25 across the three sets, a margin built largely on efficiency. Martinsville needed only 94 swings to get its 31 kills; Oblong took 103 to get 25, and the nine extra errors the Panthers could not erase proved to be the difference in a match that otherwise stayed close enough to require a decider.

Hammond was the most efficient hitter on the floor by a wide margin, converting eight of 12 attempts for a 66.7 kill percentage and a .667 hitting mark. Junior Hope Hammond was nearly as clean, hitting .444 with six kills on nine swings, and senior Trinity Simons added six kills on 15 attempts while hitting .200. Sophomore Austyn Davidson and junior Addison Mcdearmon chipped in five kills apiece.

Martinsville’s setters split the work evenly. Mcdearmon and junior Molly Kannamacher each distributed 12 assists, with Hope Hammond and senior Harper Baird adding two apiece for a team total of 28.

Simons also carried the Bluestreaks from the service line, landing four aces on 17 attempts with just one error for a 94.1 serving percentage. Martinsville finished with eight aces and only four service errors on the night.

Behind the attack, Baird anchored the back row with 19 digs and handled a team-high 20 serve-receive attempts, while Simons chipped in 10 digs and took 18 receptions. The Bluestreaks dug 56 balls as a team and put up seven total blocks, including two each from Hope Hammond and Simons.

Oblong had its own firepower. Junior Brooke Kintner led the Panthers with eight kills on 24 swings for a .250 clip, then matched that production at the service line with four aces on 16 attempts without a single miss. Senior Maddie Lewis added six kills and nine assists, and senior Norah Hoke was a factor everywhere — five kills at .238, a team-high 13 digs, two aces on a perfect eight serves and two total blocks.

Freshman Ever Glosser was the most dangerous server on the floor for either team on a per-attempt basis, striking four aces on 10 serves for a 40.0 ace percentage while adding three kills and a solo block. Senior Mia Weber also served four aces and handled a team-high 19 receptions without an error.

Junior Brylee Murray ran the Oblong offense with 13 assists on 40 ball-handling attempts, committing no handling errors, and added 11 digs. The Panthers out-aced Martinsville 14-8 overall but gave away seven service errors and committed 16 attack errors on a smaller attack volume, keeping them from converting that serving edge into a third set win.

Oblong falls to 12-13 on the season. Martinsville improves to 15-10.
