Kannamacher’s 8 Aces, Hammond’s .600 Hitting Carry Martinsville Past Arcola in Straight Sets

ARCOLA, Ill. — Martinsville turned the service line into a weapon Monday night, riding eight aces from junior Molly Kannamacher and a clinical afternoon at the net from Hope Hammond to a 2-0 non-conference road win over Arcola on Sept. 21.

The Bluestreaks improved to 15-10 with the sweep. Arcola fell to 1-23.

Kannamacher set the tone from behind the end line. The junior went 19-for-19 in serve attempts save for a single miss, serving at 94.7 percent and converting eight of them into points Arcola never touched — a 42.1 percent ace rate that repeatedly stalled the Purple Riders before they could build a rotation. She also ran the offense for stretches, handing out a team-high 10 assists while leading the back row with 10 digs.

She was not alone at the line. Senior Bella Reed added four aces on eight serves, and senior Harper Baird chipped in another. Martinsville finished with 13 aces as a team against just four service errors across 49 attempts — the single largest gap in a match that otherwise stayed tight in the rallies that actually got played out.

When Arcola did get a ball back, Martinsville finished it. Hammond, a junior, delivered six kills on 10 swings without an attack error for a .600 hitting percentage, adding a solo block and a pair of digs. Addison Mcdearmon matched that efficiency, converting four kills on five attempts, also at .600, while distributing four assists. Sophomore Austyn Davidson contributed three kills, and Victoria Vincent went 1-for-1 in limited work.

As a team, the Bluestreaks hit .279 with 21 kills on 43 attempts against nine errors, and spread 19 assists across five players. Baird anchored the defense with 11 digs and handled a match-high 11 serve receptions for Martinsville, with Trinity Simons adding four digs.

Arcola struggled to find offense against that floor defense. The Purple Riders managed six kills on 48 attempts with eight errors, finishing at minus-.042 for the match. Senior Aymara Leal led the way with two kills on nine swings and a team-best .222 clip, while sophomores Averi Kutz and Tenley Thomas each added two kills. Kutz also recorded Arcola’s lone block.

Sophomore setter Reese Miller handled the bulk of the distribution for the hosts, running 32 ball-handling attempts and producing six assists. Senior libero Mady Lyons absorbed the brunt of the Martinsville serving pressure, taking 17 serve receptions — more than any player on the floor — and adding three digs. Addyson Williams contributed three digs in a single set of work.

Griffith and Thomas each recorded an ace for Arcola, which has now dropped 23 of 24 this season.

Special Notes

Non-conference match. Martinsville is now five games over .500 at 15-10 with the regular season winding down.
