Kannamacher’s 7 Aces, Balanced Attack Carry Martinsville Past Dugger Union in Road Sweep
DUGGER, Ind. — Martinsville’s serve did most of the heavy lifting Wednesday, and the Bluestreaks never needed a fourth set. Behind seven service aces from junior Molly Kannamacher, Martinsville swept Dugger Union 3-0 in a conference match on Sept. 24, improving to 15-10 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 3-18.
Kannamacher was the engine of the match from the service line, going 24-for-25 on her serves — a 96.0 percent clip — and converting 28.0 percent of them into aces. The Bluestreaks finished with 10 aces as a team on 61 serve attempts with just six errors, a margin that kept Dugger Union out of system for long stretches of all three sets.
Martinsville’s offense spread the ball around rather than leaning on one hitter. Junior Hope Hammond and sophomore Austyn Davidson each posted a team-high seven kills, with Hammond proving the more efficient of the two. Hammond converted 46.7 percent of her 15 swings into kills and hit .200, while Davidson shouldered the heaviest workload in the rotation with 22 attack attempts. Junior Myah Arney added five kills on 16 swings and led the regulars in hitting percentage at .250.
The setting duties were split almost evenly. Junior Addison Mcdearmon handed out nine assists on 44 ball-handling attempts, and Kannamacher followed with eight on 45 attempts — a two-setter look that also kept both players active in the back row. Mcdearmon and Kannamacher each finished with 10 digs.
Defensively, senior Trinity Simons led all Martinsville players with 13 digs, averaging 4.3 per set, and chipped in two aces and two kills. Senior Harper Baird handled the bulk of the passing responsibility, taking 20 serve receptions with a single error while adding nine digs and a kill. Senior Bella Reed contributed seven digs and three receptions off the bench rotation. In all, the Bluestreaks dug 57 balls across the three sets.
The one blemish on an otherwise efficient night was Martinsville’s attacking margin. The Bluestreaks recorded 23 kills against 21 attack errors on 102 swings, a .020 team hitting percentage that left the door cracked. But with Kannamacher pinning the Bulldogs at the service line and the back row keeping rallies alive, Dugger Union was never able to take advantage.
The sweep moves Martinsville five games over .500 with the postseason approaching.
