Kintner, Glosser Power Oblong Past Martinsville in Straight Sets

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Oblong’s volleyball team handled the road end of a conference date on Thursday, sweeping Martinsville 2-0 behind a balanced attack and clean service game that never let the Bluestreaks settle in.

Junior Brooke Kintner led the Panthers with five kills on 11 swings, hitting .182 and putting the ball down on 45.5 percent of her attempts. Freshman Ever Glosser was right behind her with four kills, giving Oblong a pair of reliable finishers on the pins across both sets.

The difference, though, showed up in the margins. Oblong served at a high clip all night, with senior Mia Weber (9-for-9), senior Maddie Lewis (8-for-8) and freshman Addie Plummer (10-for-10) all finishing without a service error. Weber and Lewis each served two aces, Plummer added one, and Plummer’s seven service points were the most by any player in the match. The Panthers committed just four service errors as a team.

Martinsville could not match that efficiency at the net. The Bluestreaks finished with 10 kills against 20 attack errors on 50 swings, a team hitting mark of minus-.200. Oblong, by contrast, posted 16 kills and 13 errors on 52 attempts for a .058 clip — modest numbers, but enough separation to control the rallies.

Junior Brylee Murray ran the Oblong offense, distributing eight assists on 21 ball-handling attempts without an error while also contributing three kills on seven swings for a .286 hitting percentage. Sophomore Ava Pfeifer chipped in four assists in a clean 15-attempt night, and the Panthers finished the match with 14 assists and zero ball-handling errors.

Weber anchored the back row with a match-high 10 digs, averaging five per set. Murray added six digs and Plummer had three. Oblong’s serve-receive held up under pressure as well: Kintner handled 13 receptions with one error, Plummer passed eight without a miscue, and the Panthers surrendered just five Martinsville aces.

Sophomore Austyn Davidson gave Martinsville its most efficient stretch, posting three kills on five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage in her lone set of action. Sophomore Charity Hammond also had three kills, but on 13 swings with eight errors. Junior Ezzy Herrera added two kills, while junior Addison Mcdearmon led the Bluestreaks with six assists and junior Molly Kannamacher added three.

Senior Trinity Simons was the busiest defender on the floor for Martinsville with seven digs. Mcdearmon, Kannamacher and senior Harper Baird each added five. Baird also handled a team-high 15 serve-receive attempts with one error.

Five different Bluestreaks served an ace — Hope Hammond, Bella Reed, Kannamacher, Baird and Simons — but Martinsville never strung together the extended runs it needed to push either set the distance.

The win moved Oblong to 12-13 on the season. Martinsville dropped to 15-10.
